Celebrating LGBTQ+ life in Camden

forum+ is a local organisation that offers support services and free events and activities, to Camden’s LGBTQ+ community. We spoke to Tessa Havers-Strong, Director, to find out more.

Could you tell us a bit about forum+?

We organise events and activities that celebrate Camden and Islington’s LGBTQ+ community. We’ve built a real community and it’s lovely to see people join and make new friends. We also provide specialist support to people who are victims of LGBTQ+ hate crime and work closely with local partners.

Could you tell us a bit more about the events and activities that you organise?

All our events and activities are free to join. They’re for LGBTQ+ people, and their friends, who live, work or study in Camden or Islington, and all of our services are available to people aged 18 and over.

Our events programme has a strong emphasis on wellbeing, helping people stay active and nature – so a lot of our activities will be based around one or more of these themes. And this winter, we’re also focusing on tackling isolation and bringing people together.

For example, we regularly go kayaking on the canal by Pirate Castle, we have monthly walks in different locations around London and we host regular Cook With Pride events where people cook and enjoy a meal together.

We know that travelling to events can be a barrier for some people though so we also have a range of online events that you can attend from the comfort of your own home – including a spoken word event and a film club, which are very popular.

How do you support victims of LGBTQ+ hate crime?

If you’re a victim of homophobic, biphobic or transphobic hate crime, please remember that you’re not alone – there are many ways that we can support you. The best thing to do is get in touch with us and we can make an appointment for you to talk through your options with an experienced case worker.

Call us on 020 7388 5720 or email caseworker@forumplus.org.uk. We can also support you to report a hate crime or report it on your behalf, and we can put you in touch with other local organisations to receive further support, help and guidance.

What would you say to someone in Camden’s LGBTQ+ community who is considering getting in touch or joining forum+?

Whether you want to join our welcoming community and meet some new people, if you’ve sadly been the victim of hate crime or if you’re struggling with another issue, please get in touch. So many people tell us that after joining, their mental health improved because they felt respected and listened to, more confident and happier.

How can Camden residents support the amazing work that you do?

If you have any spare time, please consider joining our wonderful team of volunteers who help to deliver our services. We know it’s a tough time for people but if you have the means to do so, please consider donating at justgiving.com/forumplus And if you’re involved with a local community group or organisation, we’re always keen to come along or collaborate on events.
